GIS Day is Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day is a global event celebrated annually on the third Wednesday of November. It is a chance for businesses all over the world to showcase how GIS can be used and to inform people about the applications of this technology.

GIS Day was initially created in 1999, inspired by consumer advocate Ralph Nader and promoted by GIS company Esri. Nader thought people could learn about geography and how to incorporate GIS into day-to-day activities.

What is GIS?

Geographic information systems integrate, store, edit, analyze, share, and display geographic information, allowing users to visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns, and trends. Esri has demonstrated how GIS benefits many different industries and organizations. GIS can be used to help with record keeping, reporting, cost savings, and better communication with the public.

DEVNET EdgeMaps™

EdgeMaps™ provides real-time GIS integration with authoritative CAMA and Tax Data. Powered by Esri’s ArcGIS Platform, easy-to-configure web maps are embedded throughout the Edge™ software suite, offering highly valuable, interactive thematic maps. DEVNET EdgeMaps™ consumes a multitude of web maps, each uniquely designed for visualizing property characteristics, reports, and analytics. EdgeMaps™ supports ArcGIS Land Records solutions by serving real-time Local Government Information Model data.

DEVNET is excited to announce that Gaston County has become its first North Carolina customer. Gaston County will be using DEVNET’s Edge™ CAMA, Tax Assessment Administration, Personal Property, Board of Equalization, Billing and Collection, EdgeMaps™, and wEdge™ Land Records Ecosystem solutions.

“Gaston County’s main goal was to obtain a system that was very technical but easy to use, while allowing our staff to be more efficient and effective in its everyday duties and responsibilities”, explained James D. Tanner, Gaston County Tax Director. “We chose DEVNET because the system is very thorough, very map oriented, and has every tool that we feel is important to performing our everyday job functions.”

The Edge™ solutions work together to increase the workflow automation and provide a comprehensive view of the entire property tax life cycle. EdgeMaps™ provide real-time GIS integration with authoritative CAMA and Tax Data. Powered by Esri’s ArcGIS Platform, easy-to-configure web maps are embedded throughout the Edge™ software suite delivering highly valuable, interactive thematic maps.

Tanner commented that partnering with DEVNET to design a property tax solution for North Carolina gave Gaston County the opportunity to combine its state-specific knowledge with DEVNET’s experience in other states. This combined understanding served as a solid foundation for building the best software solution available for Gaston County and, ultimately, North Carolina.

“The DEVNET system will significantly increase our efficiency and provide us the necessary tools to produce a great work product,” Tanner said. “Every part of the DEVNET program, from parcel maintenance to generating valuations, far exceeds what we first expected, and we are really excited to put it to use. DEVNET is committed to developing the best property tax solution, not just for Gaston County, but also for every county in North Carolina. We look forward to our new business partnership and relationship with DEVNET.”

SQL/GIS Specialist Jeff Antonson Joins DEVNET Development Staff

The DEVNET Development team is pleased to welcome Jeff Antonson as Database Administrator. Antonson has over 17 years background in IT, with extensive experience in GIS consulting for counties. He has a wide skillset that enables him to observe and deconstruct business processes, define how they interrelate in both system and human resource perspectives, and then find the means to provide data automation operations that provide exactly the right data, in exactly the right format, with peak performance at fast speeds.

“My goal is to provide re-usable and multi-purposed SQL Server Stored Procedures for use by developers and reduce the ad hoc SQL query effort,” Antonson said. “This should speed performance of the application and reduce the time required by developers by providing a more robust, smaller, and re-usable coding footprint.”

Antonson is passionate about database management and the benefits it can bring DEVNET customers.

“Working in both GIS and the specialty of Microsoft SQL Server has expanded my knowledgebase immensely,” commented Antonson. “As we marry spatial and tabular data, we can do things in the database engine that were previously not possible at the speeds required to be truly useful. We can add even more value to our clients by leveraging their real-time data into predictive patterns and analysis forecasting, giving them the ability to see around the corner. We are poised to join ensembles of data that might otherwise be unrelated and blend them into an inter-related tapestry of predictive variable forecasting. To me, that’s an amazing and untapped resource.”

Brian Hall Brings GIS Experience to DEVNET as Project Manager

DEVNET is excited to announce that Brian Hall has joined its team as a Project Manager. Hall’s career in the GIS field includes 15 years’ combined experience working as GIS Director in Ohio for Wayne County and Stark County.

DEVNET prides itself on being current with technology while maintaining continuity with previous releases that our clients know and love. DEVNET is proactively expanding its product line through improvements to the core system, as well as developing new extensions and product additions. Our focus in 2015 was state-of-the-art GIS integration and an improved user experience; 2016 will bring major developments in mobile, workflow, reporting, and more.

“My years of county GIS experience will be an asset to DEVNET as it works to integrate new technology in the system,” Hall said. “Working with many different county offices has developed my understanding for bringing geographic solutions and enhancements to work processes. DEVNET’s design can be applied to areas that maybe have not been previously explored. DEVNET has the potential to change how county government collaborates and shares work processes to make counties more effective in their service to the public.”

Hall originally learned about DEVNET while working as GIS Director for Stark County, Ohio. While evaluating vendors during the RFP process for a new CAMA/Tax system, he said DEVNET became a very intriguing option.

“DEVNET’s integration of GIS right inside the CAMA truly peaked my interest,” recalled Hall. “Typically, GIS was always a separate export and a standalone system. The prospect of all the feature-rich data of the CAMA system being directly integrated with the geographical location of the parcel felt like a dream come true. This inspired me to keep an eye on where DEVNET was heading and ultimately led me to joining the company.”

For his initial project with DEVNET, Hall will be working with Gaston County, North Carolina.

“My goal in Gaston County is to provide a system that will set the standard for the state,” he explained. “The county’s willingness to embrace the value of adding maps directly inside the CAMA/Tax system will make this possible and will help enhance the efficiency and fairness in assessing. North Carolina will note improvements in Gaston County’s assessment and taxation process. I am excited to be a part of the team bringing DEVNET to the state.”
