GIS Day is Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day is a global event celebrated annually on the third Wednesday of November. It is a chance for businesses all over the world to showcase how GIS can be used and to inform people about the applications of this technology.

GIS Day was initially created in 1999, inspired by consumer advocate Ralph Nader and promoted by GIS company Esri. Nader thought people could learn about geography and how to incorporate GIS into day-to-day activities.

What is GIS?

Geographic information systems integrate, store, edit, analyze, share, and display geographic information, allowing users to visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns, and trends. Esri has demonstrated how GIS benefits many different industries and organizations. GIS can be used to help with record keeping, reporting, cost savings, and better communication with the public.

DEVNET EdgeMaps™

EdgeMaps™ provides real-time GIS integration with authoritative CAMA and Tax Data. Powered by Esri’s ArcGIS Platform, easy-to-configure web maps are embedded throughout the Edge™ software suite, offering highly valuable, interactive thematic maps. DEVNET EdgeMaps™ consumes a multitude of web maps, each uniquely designed for visualizing property characteristics, reports, and analytics. EdgeMaps™ supports ArcGIS Land Records solutions by serving real-time Local Government Information Model data.

“Morgan County had been a DEVNET customer since 1999,” said Shawn Artis of Morgan County’s GIS Department. “We believe the addition of DEVNET’s wEdge™ solution will be a valuable tool for the public, local officials, and our partnering agencies. It will provide transparency to the assessment process by allowing access to both real-time and historic property information, and users will be able to make more well-informed decisions.”

DEVNET wEdge™ solutions provide web access to Edge™ Property Tax solutions, giving the public, local offices, outside agencies, and partner organizations a gateway to real-time authoritative taxpayer information.

“Since we were already using DEVNET solutions in various county offices, we were familiar with the DEVNET suite of programs,” Artis explained. “The wEdge™ solution felt like a perfect fit for our needs, and it can be easily synced with the current county ArcGIS software. We hope it will assist taxpayers with their property information, give title companies and attorneys easy access to deed information, and provide municipal departments with reliable and accurate data.”

SQL/GIS Specialist Jeff Antonson Joins DEVNET Development Staff

The DEVNET Development team is pleased to welcome Jeff Antonson as Database Administrator. Antonson has over 17 years background in IT, with extensive experience in GIS consulting for counties. He has a wide skillset that enables him to observe and deconstruct business processes, define how they interrelate in both system and human resource perspectives, and then find the means to provide data automation operations that provide exactly the right data, in exactly the right format, with peak performance at fast speeds.

“My goal is to provide re-usable and multi-purposed SQL Server Stored Procedures for use by developers and reduce the ad hoc SQL query effort,” Antonson said. “This should speed performance of the application and reduce the time required by developers by providing a more robust, smaller, and re-usable coding footprint.”

Antonson is passionate about database management and the benefits it can bring DEVNET customers.

“Working in both GIS and the specialty of Microsoft SQL Server has expanded my knowledgebase immensely,” commented Antonson. “As we marry spatial and tabular data, we can do things in the database engine that were previously not possible at the speeds required to be truly useful. We can add even more value to our clients by leveraging their real-time data into predictive patterns and analysis forecasting, giving them the ability to see around the corner. We are poised to join ensembles of data that might otherwise be unrelated and blend them into an inter-related tapestry of predictive variable forecasting. To me, that’s an amazing and untapped resource.”
